Nextcloud

Nextcloud All-in-One (AIO), the official Docker install, runs on a Raspberry Pi as long as the board and the OS are 64-bit: its FAQ lists aarch64/arm64 as a supported architecture alongside x86_64. Nextcloud says it "scales from a Raspberry Pi with 2 users" upward, but it states memory per PHP process (128MB minimum, 512MB recommended), so how much RAM you need depends on your users and apps.

#What Nextcloud is

Nextcloud is a self-hosted collaboration platform. The core is file sync and share. "Nextcloud Hub" adds Talk (chat and video calls), Groupware (calendar, contacts, mail), Office (LibreOffice-based online editing), an AI Assistant and Flow automations. The server is AGPL-3.0.

The newest release is 35.0.1 (24 September 2026). Nextcloud maintains several major versions at once. On 10 September 2026 it also shipped 34.0.4, 33.0.9 and 32.0.15, and the manual lists 35 as "latest", 34 and 33 as "stable", and 36 as upcoming. If your autocomplete still says "nextcloud 34", that's why.

#Nextcloud system requirements

From the Nextcloud 35 admin manual:

Nextcloud RAM requirements. The manual doesn't give a single number. It says a minimum of 128MB per process and a recommended 512MB per process, with overall needs "greatly variable" depending on users, apps, files and activity. The built-in updater needs at least 256MB. In low-memory setups, some apps may need their defaults adjusting or have to be disabled.

32-bit. A 64-bit CPU, OS and PHP is "strongly recommended". 32-bit still works, but dates before 1970 and after 2038 aren't supported and some apps may break. On a Pi, that means a 64-bit OS image.

#Nextcloud AIO on a Raspberry Pi

AIO is a single "mastercontainer" with a web interface on ports 8080/8443. It installs and updates everything else for you. It includes:

• Nextcloud, with Redis and APCu caching and PostgreSQL
• the Files high-performance backend (client push)
• optional Nextcloud Office or EuroOffice, the Talk backend with a TURN server, Talk recording, Imaginary (previews for HEIC, HEIF, PDF, SVG, TIFF, WebP and more), ClamAV antivirus, full-text search and Whiteboard
• BorgBackup-based backups, restore from the AIO interface, and automatic TLS through Let's Encrypt

A few AIO details matter on small hardware. It defaults to a maximum of 512MB per PHP process, which you can change. It can pass a GPU device through for hardware transcoding. It can also keep all its Docker files on a separate drive, so on a Pi you can put everything on an SSD rather than the SD card.

A Raspberry Pi 5 with 4GB or more is a sensible start for a household, and 8GB gives you room for Office and Talk. That's our judgement from the per-process figures above, not an official Nextcloud number. Budget more if you enable the optional containers.

One caveat from the AIO FAQ if you ever move this onto a VPS: it lists providers it has had trouble with, including older Strato VPS on Virtuozzo, hosts with a low numproc limit, and Hostinger VPS, which it says miss a kernel feature AIO needs. #Apps and clients

• Desktop: Windows 10+, macOS 12 Monterey+ (64-bit), and Linux through an AppImage.
• Files mobile app: iOS 17+ and Android 9+.
• Talk app: iOS 16+ and Android 8+.
• The Nextcloud-branded iOS, Android and desktop apps are free.

For photos, the third-party Memories app turns Nextcloud into something closer to Google Photos. It adds a timeline sorted by EXIF date, people and object grouping (through the recognize and facerecognition apps), video transcoding with HLS, and migration from Google Takeout.

#Is Nextcloud free?

Self-hosting the Community edition is free. Nextcloud Enterprise is a paid subscription for large deployments. The pricing page, as of 29 September 2026, lists these prices in euros per user per year, net of VAT:

Subscriptions start at 100 users. Below that, Nextcloud points you to Nextcloud One, a managed instance hosted in Germany with 24/7 support and 30 days of backups. The admin manual adds that premium subscriptions come with 5 years of long-term support.

#Who it suits

Nextcloud suits you if you want one self-hosted place for files, calendars, contacts and calls, and you're happy to maintain a PHP application with a database behind it.
